My father, Horace Fish Jr., was born in the Pocono Mountains of northeastern Pennsylvania. At the age of 19 he was stricken with infantile paralysis. After spending many months in hospi- tals, he was finally able to get around with braces and crutches. After awhile he was able to walk with a leg brace and the aid of a cane. He was sent to the Institute for the Crippled and Disabled in New York City, where he received his diploma in jewelry making after finish- ing the difficult course in eight months.

The Boy Scouts of America is one of the largest youth organi- zations in the United States, with over four million members in its age-related divisions. Since its founding, more than 110 million Americans have been members.
